Chards Prices, Demand and Supply Overview

Germany paid the most for chards in Q3 2026: EUR 148.0/100 kg, down 0.9% from EUR 149.3/100 kg in Q2. Import costs, transport and retail margins and a short domestic growing season keep German prices well above the other three markets. Worldwide, the average fell 1.3% to EUR 120.5/100 kg from EUR 122.1/100 kg, mostly because harvests increased in Italy, France and Spain, which led wholesalers to lower purchase prices. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the EUR 115.1-124.7/100 kg range, with weather in the main growing areas, harvest volumes, labor costs and demand from retailers and the catering sector doing most of the work.

Chards, also called Swiss chard, are leafy green vegetables grown for their large leaves and colorful stalks. They are sold fresh in bunches or loose, and used in cooking, salads, soups and ready meals, and for processing as frozen leaves. Prices in this report refer to fresh chards at wholesale level and are quoted per 100 kilograms. They depend on harvest volumes, weather, labor costs and demand from retailers and caterers.

Production is concentrated in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and Turkey in Europe, with additional output in the United States and Australia. Chards grow quickly and are harvested by hand, so labor costs form a large part of the price. The leaves wilt within days of cutting, and supply responds quickly to weather. Prices vary by leaf quality, bunch size and packaging.

Chards Price Forecast for 2026

Prices should ease slightly through the rest of 2026. Harvests in the main growing areas are at their seasonal peak and supply is ample, but cooler autumn weather and higher labor costs limit the size of the decline. Year on year, the global average has moved from EUR 119.2/100 kg to EUR 120.5/100 kg, an increase of 1.1%.

The balance of risks for Q4 tilts downward. What could push prices higher? Cold weather that slows growth, frost damage or higher labor costs would lift prices. What could pull them lower? Mild weather that speeds up harvests, weaker retail demand or higher imports would lower prices.
