The United States paid the most for chayote in Q3 2026: USD 1,450/MT, up 1.2% from USD 1,433/MT in Q2. Import duties, freight and cold chain costs and steady demand from Latin American and Caribbean grocery stores keep American prices well above the other three markets. Worldwide, the average rose 1.5% to USD 878/MT from USD 865/MT, mostly because weather losses reduced supply in Mexico and Guatemala and export demand improved in all four markets. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the USD 855-925/MT range, with weather in the growing areas, export demand, freight costs and demand from ethnic grocery stores doing most of the work.
Chayote is a green, pear-shaped squash grown on vines in tropical and subtropical regions, also called mirliton or vegetable pear. It is eaten cooked in soups, stews, salads and side dishes. Prices in this report refer to fresh fruit at the packer or wholesale level and are quoted per metric ton. They depend on harvest volumes, weather, labor and transport costs and export demand.
Chayote is grown mainly in Mexico, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Guatemala, and Mexico and Costa Rica supply most of the exports to the United States and Canada. The vines produce for most of the year, and the fruit is harvested by hand and put into cartons for export. Prices vary by fruit size, skin quality and packaging.
Prices should rise modestly through the rest of 2026. Weather losses have reduced supply in several areas, freight costs remain high and export demand is firm. Larger plantings in Mexico and Costa Rica limit the size of the increase. For reference, the Q3 2026 global average of USD 878/MT compares with USD 840/MT a year earlier, an increase of 4.5%.
For Q4, risks to the price are evenly spread. What could push prices higher? Heavy rain or storms that damage crops, higher freight costs or stronger export demand would lift prices. What could pull them lower? Favorable weather, larger harvests or weaker demand from grocery stores would lower prices.
