Germany paid the most for container glass in Q3 2026: USD 880/MT, up 1.4% from USD 868/MT in Q2. High energy and carbon costs, strict emission rules and strong demand from wine and beverage packers keep German prices above the other three markets. Worldwide, the average rose 1.2% to USD 660/MT from USD 652/MT, mostly because higher energy and soda ash costs and stronger demand from beverage, food and pharmaceutical packers led glassmakers to raise prices in all four markets. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the USD 645-695/MT range, with energy and natural gas costs, soda ash prices, cullet supply and demand from beverage and food packers doing most of the work.
Container glass is the glass used to make bottles and jars for beverages, food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is made by melting sand, soda ash, limestone and recycled glass, called cullet, in furnaces that run all day and night, then forming it in molds. Prices in this report refer to standard flint and amber bottles and jars in the regions listed and are quoted per metric ton. They depend on energy costs, soda ash and cullet prices and demand from packers.
Production is concentrated in large furnaces owned by a small number of groups in China, India, the United States and Europe. Energy makes up a large part of the cost, so natural gas and electricity prices move prices of bottles and jars. Recycled glass lowers energy use, and the share of cullet in the batch is rising. Because glass is heavy and fragile, plants usually sell within a few hundred kilometers.
Prices should rise modestly through the rest of 2026. Energy and soda ash costs stay firm, demand from beverage and food packers is steady and holiday season orders add support. Higher use of cullet limits the size of the increase. A year ago the global average was USD 633/MT, and the latest quarter, at USD 660/MT, is 4.3% higher.
The risks for Q4 are balanced, with no clear tilt either way. What could push prices higher? Higher energy prices, higher soda ash prices or stronger demand from beverage packers would lift prices. What could pull them lower? Lower energy prices, higher cullet supply or weaker demand from packers would lower prices.
