Kenya paid the most for Emata rice in Q3 2026: USD 1,425/MT, up 1.9% from USD 1,399/MT in Q2. Prices there carry import parity and handling costs on top of mill prices. Worldwide, the average rose 1.8% to USD 1,175/MT from USD 1,154/MT, mostly because import and transport costs stayed high while buyers kept restocking. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the USD 1,138-1,258/MT range, with paddy harvests, import parity and transport costs doing most of the work.
Emata is a long-grain milled white rice sold in the open markets of East Africa. It is bought by households, caterers and institutional kitchens, and it is traded in bags of 25 and 50 kilograms. This report tracks the wholesale price of milled Emata rice, quoted in US dollars per tonne, in the main consuming markets of the region. Prices follow the size of the local paddy crop, import parity with Asian rice, transport and milling costs, and the pace of retail demand.
Tanzania and Uganda grow most of the paddy behind the rice sold in the region, while Kenya and Rwanda rely on a mix of local mills and imports. In June 2026 wholesale quotes stood near USD 1,399 per tonne in Kenya, USD 1,368 in Rwanda, USD 1,021 in Uganda and USD 828 in Tanzania. The gap between Tanzania and Kenya shows how much freight, handling charges and import margins add as rice moves toward the largest consuming centres.
Prices should rise through the rest of 2026. Firm import parity and steady demand support quotes. Year on year, the global average has moved from USD 1,060/MT to USD 1,175/MT, an increase of 10.8%.
For Q4, the risks are weighted toward higher prices. What could push prices higher? A weaker paddy crop, higher import costs or faster restocking would lift prices. What could pull them lower? A larger harvest, cheaper imports or weak household demand would lower prices.
