The global market for calcium carbonate is expected to be driven by uses of the mineral across sectors, including glass and ceramics, iron and steel, metallurgy, mining, sludge treatment, water treatment, animal feed and nutritional supplementation, adhesives, caulks & sealants, agriculture, health and wellness, pharmaceuticals, plastics, paper, paint, etc. North America, Europe, and Asia are expected to be key markets.
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), the carbonic salt of calcium, appears as white, odorless powder or colorless crystals. It is nearly insoluble in water. Calcium carbonate occurs extensively in rocks across the world and is one of the most useful substances man has known. Calcium carbonate is most commonly found in its natural forms such as chalk, limestone, and marble, created by the sedimentation of shells of small fossilized snails, shellfish, and coral over millions of years. While chemically identical, these forms differ in several aspects, such as whiteness, purity, thickness and homogeneity.
Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is obtained by mining of limestone. Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is industrially produced through the decomposition of limestone to calcium oxide, and consequent recarbonization, or as a by-product of the Solvay process (employed to manufacture sodium carbonate). Precipitated calcium carbonate is purer than ground calcium carbonate and has different, customizable handling properties.
Therapeutic applications of calcium carbonate include its use as a phosphate buffer in hemodialysis, an antacid in gastric hyperacidity, and a calcium supplement to prevent and treat osteoporosis. Other applications include food colouring, food firming, and fertilizer. Calcium carbonate is used as a filler as well as a coating pigment (owing to its distinct white colour) in paper, plastics, paints and coatings industries. Its brightness and light scattering properties make it valuable to the paper industry, where it is used as a cost-effective filler to brighten and smoothen opaque paper. In paints, calcium carbonate acts as an extender and may account for nearly 30% of paint weight. The mineral is also used extensively as filler in adhesives and sealants.
Calcium carbonate is commonly found in grocery stores in several products, such as toothpaste, baking powder, wine, dough and dry-mix dessert mixes. It is also used in animal feed and an active ingredient in agricultural lime. The mineral also has applications in water and waste treatment.
Calcium carbonate is an important element in the building and construction industry. By itself, it serves as a building material (for example, in the form of marble), and as a component added to cement. It is used in making mortar which is utilized in bonding bricks, concrete blocks, stones, roofing shingles, rubber compounds, and tiles. Carbon dioxide and lime, formed when calcium carbonate decomposes, is used in steel, glass and paper industries. Being an antacid, calcium carbonate is used in industrial environments to neutralize acidic conditions in soil as well as water.
Rising world population has led to an increase in demand for comfortable and hygienic diapers. Finely ground particles of calcium carbonate are used to produce microporous breathable films used in diapers. FilmLink, a product by Imerys, is made from very fine grade of wet ground calcium carbonate. Its circular and porous nature leads to optimum moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), which means that air and water vapors pass through the film, but moisture stays in the diaper. FilmLink is sold to baby diaper companies across the globe, and also used in other applications, such as in the inner layer of surgical gowns (to keep the body cool), and in adult incontinence pads – an emerging sector.
In 2021, Huber Engineered Materials (HEM) acquired Nutri Granulations business in assets of IMCD US, LLC in La Mirada, California. Nutri Granulations produced granular calcium carbonate and mixtures comprising granulated calcium carbonate and vitamins, used in the production of dietary supplements and food.
While calcium carbonate has applications across industrial sectors and is a very useful substance, rising costs may hinder market growth. In 2022, Omya announced an increase in prices for its calcium carbonate products in Europe citing cost escalation of raw materials, chemicals, energy, packaging, services, transportation costs, and general inflation across countries.
