Cryotherapy, also known as cold therapy, is a treatment which is used to remove or destroy tissues from your body that carry any infection or are impaired in any way. It can be used to cure numerous skin conditions and some cancers as well. Cancers like prostate and liver cancer are curable with the help of this therapy. It can cure tissues, both on the inside and outside of the body. This treatment is also known as cryoablation or cryosurgery.
This therapy is used in minimally invasive therapies and is usually performed without any open surgeries. Even the recovery from this therapy is quick. These therapies are usually painless. The cancers in which this therapy is mostly used include bone cancer, cervical cancer, liver cancer, and prostate cancer. This therapy can also cure or treat the precancerous cells in skin and cervix which can potentially convert into cancer.
The conditions other than cancers for which this therapy can be used include the following:
In this therapy, extreme cold is generated with the help of nitrogen or argon gas, which then targets the problematic cells or tissues. These problematic cells or tissues are killed by this procedure as they are frozen to death. The tissues that are frozen, kill the cells after they thaw. Similarly, tissues that were frozen inside the body gets dissolved, tissued frozen on the outside form a slough over the affected area which falls off later, as the affected area heals. This therapy can be performed in two ways, internal and external.
For the affected areas that are on the surface of skin, doctors may use cotton swabs or a spraying equipment, depending upon the need. For the areas underneath the skin, doctors use an equipment called Cryoprobe. This cryoprobe could be inserted into the skin during a surgery, and then the argon or nitrogen gas is passed through it and then the doctor targets the affected cell or tissue and eventually kill it by this procedure. There are times when more than a single cryoprobe is required to perform this treatment therapy. Doctors use ultrasounds and MRIs to take the cryoprobe to the exact spot so that the neighbouring healthy cells do not get affected by this cryotherapy. There are five types of cryotherapies that could be suitable for specific conditions a person is going through. The types are as follows:
Hence, consultation from a doctor is advisable prior to the cryotherapy session.
The market can be categorised on the basis of product, therapy type, application, end user, therapeutic market, and major regions.
