A major factor that underpins the demand for marine structural integrity assessment is lifecycle cost optimization. Shipowners face the challenge of maximizing asset utilization while at the same time, keeping maintenance budgets under control. In line with that, NYK Line in March 2024, revealed a plan to broaden the application of its structural health evaluation program throughout its LNG carrier fleet in order to sustain long term charter commitments and lessen unplanned downtime.

Currently, classification societies require more detailed structural evaluations for vessels that want to be granted extended class notations or have their life extension approved. The trend is very strong in offshore support vessels and specialized tankers. Digitalization is having a profound impact on service delivery models. The use of digital twins, sensor inputs, and historical inspection datasets has become a norm in integrity assessments. For example, DNV, a company, has taken a step further by embedding digital hull models within their integrity assessment platforms, thus allowing the simulation of stress behavior under different operational scenarios. These tools help to increase the precision and also create a stronger connection between structural assessments and the actual physical hull inspections.

Challenges related to data availability and consistency continue to exist. A significant number of ageing vessels do not have complete inspection histories or reliable baseline data, which limits the accuracy of integrity models. Integrity recommendations may imply that the reduced operating limits or early steel replacement are feasible, which in turn, can be at odds with commercial priorities. Hence, the communication between assessment providers, hull inspection teams, and vessel operators must be very effective in order to ensure mutual understanding and practical implementation.

As a matter of fact, the adoption will continue to grow stronger in the future and is expected to become widespread as vessels age and regulatory frameworks tighten. The utilization of structural integrity assessment services will be viewed as a leading measure for intervention rather than a compliance exercise carried out reactively.
