Ultrasound is a popular veterinary imaging modality, offering distinct advantages over radiography in specific diagnostic applications. With respect to high resolution imaging, spatial resolution refers to the ability to distinguish between two closely spaced objects, on the other hand, contrast resolution denotes the ability to discern the density or make-up of objects on the basis of minor differences in brightness. Ultrasound systems must be able to image superficial as well as deep anatomical structures with outstanding spatial and contrast resolution. Features such as Phase Inversion Harmonics and Speckle Reduction Imaging improve spatial and contrast resolution, offering enhanced image clarity.

Automatic image optimization enables the optimization of image quality, reduces examination time and improves diagnostic capabilities. Thus, veterinarians are able to focus more on the patient and have to spend less time adjusting the machine. In most modern ultrasound equipment, Auto Optimization is a standard feature.

With advancements in technology, veterinary ultrasound systems have become more advanced and come to offer more versatility and improved diagnostic capability. However, a complicated user interface allows for less adjustment to improve images. Some features that enhance ease of use of a system include swivel and tilting of large monitors, simultaneous split screen, GE Scan Assistant like features, and “Plug and Play” veterinary presets.

 

Wide Range of Applications and Technological Advancements Expected to Contribute to Market Growth

Applications for veterinary ultrasound include pregnancy diagnosis, twin pregnancies, pregnancy losses, pseudopregnancy, ovarian cysts and haematoma, ovarian tumours and infection; scanning of organs such as liver, kidney, urinary bladder, spleen, uterus, ovaries, teat and udder; biopsy guidance for internal masses and cytocentesis (liver and kidney biopsies, pericardium and chest drainage); bone heal monitoring; and cardiac evaluations.  Therapeutic applications include physical therapy and cancer treatment, treatment of cataract by phacoemulsification, breaking up of kidney stones by lithotripsy, intervenional biopsy, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

Musculoskeletal ultrasonography is a fast-expanding domain in veterinary medicine. While the use of ultrasound has been common for musculoskeletal disorders in equine sports medicine and human medicine, it is being increasingly employed in small animal patients due to greater identification of soft tissue injuries. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography offers advantages such as exploration of the contralateral limb, evaluation symmetry of the tendinous structures, repetition of ultrasound examination to evaluate the healing process. Increased number of sports competitions warranting greater involvement of animal strength have also contributed to a rise in musculoskeletal injuries.

Several leading manufacturers offer veterinary ultrasound machines for equine, large animal, small animal, zoo mammal, and marine mammal medicine. Major companies include IMV Imaging, Draminski S. A., FUJIFILM Sonosite Inc., E.I. Medical Imaging and Esaote SpA.

At the end of 2017, BCF Technology and ECM (Echo Control Medical) came together to create a new imaging division within the IMV Technologies group. In 2018, BCF Technology and ECM brand names became IMV imaging. Together, with more than 500 employees, the businesses sought to offer extensive animal imaging solutions including ultrasound, x-ray and three-dimensional veterinary specific imaging equipment.
