Global Agricultural Microbials Market to Grow at a CAGR of 14.2% During the Period 2024-2032, Driven by Demand for Sustainable Microbial-based Agricultural Solutions

Global Agricultural Microbials Market

According to a new report by EMR titled, ‘Global Agricultural Microbials Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032’, the global agricultural microbials market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.2% during the period 2024-2032, driven by demand for microbial solutions that offer better crop growth and protection.

As global demand for food increases, the agricultural sector is confronted by the challenge of enhancing productivity while decreasing the sector’s environmental effect. Microbial-based solutions enable superior crop growth, protection, and yield, reducing dependency on chemical-based solutions. Microbial-based agricultural solutions act as crop probiotics, biofertilizers, biostimulants, biocontrols, and biofungicides, among others. These products may carry one or multiple strains of bacteria or fungi, and may be applied to the soil, seeds, or as foliar sprays. The global market for agricultural microbials is expected to be driven by demand for and adoption of sustainable and innovative microbial-based solutions. North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia are expected to be key markets.

The last decade has witnessed a significant increase in the development of agricultural microbial-based products, including bacteria and fungi. While several leading and established companies have engaged in constant research and development and increased investments to come up with innovative microbial-based agricultural solutions, multiple start-up firms have emerged that are focused on microbial product design and development. In 2022, Corteva Agriscience introduced a novel foliar bionutrient - Kinsidro® Grow - in Europe through an agreement with Pro Farm Technologies, a subsidiary of Marrone Bio Innovations. Kinsidro® Grow is a solution that supplies plants with key nutrients, strengthening the flora.

In 2021, Corteva expanded an agreement with Elemental Enzymes to deliver growers an innovative biofungicide for a wide range of row crops including soybeans, cereals, corn, oilseeds, rice and sugarcane, as well as turf and ornamental applications. The naturally derived peptide primes the plant’s immune system and enables the plant to defend itself from fungal diseases like Asian soybean rust, Cercospora, and wheat head scab.

In 2020, Sound Agriculture partnered with Syngenta to decrease nitrogen use in China while maintaining on-farm productivity. Sound Agriculture's flagship product SOURCE™ stimulated soil microbes to access more nitrogen and phosphorus at the root zone, decreasing the need for nitrogen fertilizer.

In 2021, UPL announced a long-term collaboration with Chr. Hansen to develop and commercialize microbial-based solutions (including biostimulants and biopesticides) to help growers across the globe combat pests and diseases, and enhance crop quality and yield. Through the collaboration, UPL sought to capitalize on its global presence to carry out research and recognize opportunities and product concepts to address growers' pain points. On the basis of findings, Chr. Hansen would devise biological products according to their microbial capabilities while UPL registered and commercialized the products through its extensive global distribution network.

In 2021, UPL Ltd. launched a new Natural Plant Protection (NPP) business unit to increase the company’s biosolutions capacity for sustainable agricultural offerings globally.

In 2022, Koppert Spain signed an agreement with UPL Iberia to market many of its biological solutions in Spain and Portugal. The agreement afforded Koppert access to a wider distribution network. UPL would sell Trianum-P, Trianum G, Mycotal and Pegafit by Koppert under UPL’s own brands - Thoderm P, Thoderm-G, Lecisum and Barandel, respectively.
