Press Release

Global Ammonium Sulfate Market to Grow at a CAGR of 2.3% During the Period 2024-2032, Driven by Demand from the Fertiliser Industry

Global Ammonium Sulfate Market

According to a new report by EMR titled, ‘Global Ammonium Sulfate Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032’, the global ammonium sulfate market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.3% during the period 2024-2032, driven by application categories such as fertilisers and food additives.

Fertilizer is the most common application for ammonium sulphate, controlling more than 70% of the total market share. The fertilizer sector is expected to drive the ammonium sulfate market. Other nitrate-based fertilisers can cause soil denitrification and leaching, hence farmers prefer ammonium sulfate-based fertilisers. Ammonium sulfate is a quick-acting acidic fertiliser that is particularly good for saline and alkaline soil. It contains about 20.5 percent nitrogen; there is no nitrogen loss through leaching in ammonium sulfate-based fertilisers, making them more suitable for application at the time of planting. Ammonium sulfate contains critical nitrogenous components as well as sulfur (24 percent ); it can be used as a direct application fertiliser or as a component of NPK blends and compound fertilisers.

Other significant industries for market growth include pharmaceuticals (used in the purification of antibodies and as a cleaning agent in vaccination processes, among other uses) and food additives. Ammonium sulphate has several applications in the food industry. It is utilised as a dough strengthener, a stabiliser, and a buffering agent. Further, it is used in sausage casings, bread and pasta products, and bakers' yeast fermentation. Employed as a dough conditioner or dough strengthener, it increases yeast fermentation capability and provides nitrogen, which yeast may readily utilise for protein synthesis and multiplication. The additional nitrogen for yeast development and consumption improves the product's consistency, volume, crumb, and shelf life.

The primary markets are projected to be North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Various other uses of ammonium sulfate include those in cattle feed (cellulose insulation), chemical industry (persulfate production), fire extinguisher powder and flame proofing agents, production of metals such as chromium and noble metals like gold, as a flotation supplementary in the treatment of ores, woodworking for the manufacture of curing agents for urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde resins employed in the production of chipboard, the pharmaceutical sector as food for microorganisms, the textile sector as an additive to dye baths, wadding and wicks, the wood pulp industry for yeast and sulfite liquor production, etc.

Generally, ammonium sulfate, (NH4)2SO4, is available in a dry form (crystalline or compacted and granular). It is very soluble in water and quickly absorbs moisture. Crystalline ammonium sulfate comes in a variety of particle sizes and forms. Because ammonium sulphate particles have a tendency to cake in storage, degrade, and generate dust, conditioning agents such as dust control coatings and anti-caking coatings are widely used at manufacturing and shipping locations. At times, such treatments may be necessary at downstream storage and transfer facilities.
