Calcium hydroxide has several applications in building and paving materials. It is found in mortar, plasters, and cements. Calcium hydroxide, also known as hydrated lime, helps enhance the durability of asphalt structures such as roads, highways, walkways, etc. In mortar, calcium hydroxide is mixed with sand and water to form a paste which is applied between bricks to bind them together. After the water in the paste evaporates, the calcium hydroxide and sand mixture forms a hard adhesive to hold the bricks together.

Very acidic soil can be treated with calcium hydroxide to make the soil more neutral. Similarly, exhaust gases released from factories can be treated with calcium hydroxide.
