Distal femoral fractures caused by events such as road traffic accidents, and falling down pose several challenges to surgeons. Cases include young patients caught up in high-energy trauma, for example, road traffic accidents, and senior citizens suffering low-energy falls. Thus, occurrence of traumatic injury is expected to drive the global market for condylar plate fixation system. Advancements in plating techniques are expected to boost market growth. North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are expected to be key markets.
The LCP Condylar Plate System, while having several similarities to conventional plate fixation methods, possesses some important improvements. The technical innovation represented by locking screws affords the ability to generate a fixed-angle construct while employing familiar AO plating techniques. Locking capability is crucial to a fixed-angle construct in osteopenic bone or multifragment fractures with compromised screw purchase. While these screws are not dependent on plate-to-bone compression to resist patient load, the screws function like multiple, small angled blade plates. Locking screws engaged in the plate generate a fixed-angle construct that enhances fixation in osteopenic bone and multifragmentary fractures. Multiple screw fixation in the femoral condyles enables better fixation of multiple distal fractures.
While closed and open treatment methods could be used to treat condylar fractures, all treatment approaches include consequent functional therapy, and each can be complemented with maxillo-mandibular fixation. Miniplates, fastened to the surface of the bone with the help of screws are used to assess base of the condyle and lower part of the mandible neck fractures. Straight plates with linear hole arrangement, L-shaped plates and multidimensional plates (3D plates) are commonly used. Use of two plates (double plate technique) or a single 3D plate has been found to give more satisfactory results; such patterns include Strut, Rhombic, Trapezoid (TCP), Delta (DCCP), Lambda, A-shape (ACP) and X-shape (XCP).
