The United States paid the most for cast polypropylene (CPP) film in Q3 2026: USD 2,450/MT, down 0.9% from USD 2,472/MT in Q2. Higher labor and freight costs, tariffs on imported film and a smaller number of local producers keep American prices above the other three markets. Worldwide, the average fell 1.2% to USD 2,132/MT from USD 2,157/MT, mostly because lower polypropylene resin prices and new film capacity in Asia led film makers to lower offers in all four markets. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the USD 2,035-2,205/MT range, with polypropylene resin prices, new capacity in Asia, energy costs and demand from food and snack packaging converters doing most of the work.
Cast polypropylene (CPP) film is a plastic film made by extruding polypropylene resin through a flat die and cooling it on chilled rollers. It is clear, heat sealable and flexible, and it is used as the sealing layer in laminated packaging for snacks, bakery products, frozen food, textiles and stationery. Prices are quoted per metric ton and depend on resin costs, energy costs, film thickness and demand from packaging converters.
Production is concentrated in China, India, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. China has added large capacity in the past three years, and exports of low-priced film have increased. Film makers buy polypropylene resin from petrochemical producers, so resin prices set most of the cost. Prices vary by thickness, grade, treatment and order size, and most volume is sold under quarterly contracts.
Prices should ease slightly through the rest of 2026. New capacity in Asia keeps supply ample, resin prices stay low and demand from converters is soft. Seasonal packaging demand before the end of the year limits the size of the decline. A year ago the global average was USD 2,206/MT, and the latest quarter, at USD 2,132/MT, is 3.4% lower.
For Q4, the risks are weighted toward lower prices. What could push prices higher? Higher resin prices, closures of older film lines or stronger packaging demand would lift prices. What could pull them lower? Further capacity additions, lower resin prices or weaker demand from food packaging would extend the decline.
