Japan paid the most for crab in Q3 2026: USD 21.50/KG, down 0.9% from USD 21.70/KG in Q2. Import costs, strict quality standards and premium demand from restaurants and retailers keep Japanese prices above the other three markets. Worldwide, the average fell 1.1% to USD 14.90/KG from USD 15.07/KG, mostly because larger landings and higher stocks in cold storage led processors and importers to lower prices in all four markets. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the USD 14.23-15.42/KG range, with landings, quota levels, fuel costs, stocks in cold storage and holiday season demand doing most of the work.
Crab here means frozen crab sold as whole cooked crab, sections and clusters, caught or farmed in coastal waters. It is eaten steamed, boiled or in soups, and is sold to restaurants, retailers and processors. Prices in this report refer to frozen crab at export or import level and are quoted per kilogram. They depend on landings, quota levels, fuel costs and demand from restaurants.
Supply comes from Indonesia, Vietnam, Canada, Russia, the United States and China. Crab is caught in traps and trawls or farmed in ponds, then cooked and frozen at sea or at coastal plants. Trade follows species and size, and snow crab, blue swimming crab and king crab sell at very different prices. Japan, the United States and South Korea are major buyers.
Prices should ease slightly through the rest of 2026. Landings are larger and cold storage holds ample stocks, but holiday season demand and firm quotas in Canada limit the size of the decline. Against USD 14.69/KG in Q3 2025, the current global average of USD 14.90/KG represents an increase of 1.4%.
For Q4, the risks are weighted toward lower prices. What could push prices higher? Smaller landings, lower quotas or stronger holiday season demand would lift prices. What could pull them lower? Larger landings, higher stocks or weaker demand from restaurants would lower prices.
