Progesterone barely moved in 2025, and the US, the priciest market on our list, is a good example. It opened near USD 197,000/MT and closed the year around USD 205,000/MT, up about 4.1%. Tight global supply did the lifting; the odd bout of destocking pulled the other way. The global average hardly strayed from its band, USD 172,000/MT early in 2025 to USD 179,000/MT by December, then a dip to USD 178,000/MT in Q1 2026 before firming back to USD 181,000/MT in Q2. Steady diosgenin costs, steady hormone-therapy demand: nothing to push it far in either direction.
Progesterone (CAS 57-83-0, C21H30O2) is a natural steroid hormone. Two routes make it: semi-synthesis off diosgenin, a sapogenin pulled from Dioscorea yam, or off soy phytosterols by microbial biotransformation. The finished API often gets micronised. Where does it go? Hormone replacement therapy and women's reproductive health, mostly, menopause, luteal and fertility support, pregnancy maintenance, with a veterinary slice on top. Price follows a short list: diosgenin and phytosterol costs, the energy that hydrogenation and fermentation burn through, freight, and how much hormone-therapy demand is out there.
For the rest of 2026, expect not much, tilted gently up. Global supply is tight, held by a handful of integrated producers, and that keeps the bottom firm. Diosgenin harvests have been steady, so the feedstock side is quiet. Demand's steady, freight's easing. Shallow moves, then, rather than anything decisive.
The upside risk is all on the supply side: a compliance shutdown in the east-coast Chinese clusters, or a diosgenin harvest that comes up short, would squeeze a base that's already narrow. The downside risk is Asian spot competition turning aggressive, or a deeper round of destocking from pharmaceutical and veterinary buyers. Either drags quotes down.
| Region | 2026 Price Range (USD/MT) | Outlook |
| Global Average | 179,000 - 195,000 | Tight API supply, steady hormone-therapy demand |
| United States | 205,000 - 222,000 | Import reliance and regulation, the dearest market |
| China | 156,000 - 172,000 | Integrated diosgenin keeps China cheapest |
| Germany | 176,000 - 192,000 | Energy and compliance sustain a premium |
| India | 165,000 - 181,000 | Fermentation capacity holds a firm middle |
The US firmed a little in Q2, to USD 207,000/MT from USD 204,000/MT, about 1.5%. Buying came back once the year-end destocking was done, and supply stayed tight.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q2 2026 in United States?
Hormone-therapy and fertility buyers returned after trimming stock late in 2025. Tight global supply held the bottom. USD 207,000/MT was where it landed.
China stayed cheapest, but firmed to USD 158,000/MT from USD 155,000/MT, roughly 1.9%. Intermediate supply came back after the winter shutdowns, and export demand held steady.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q2 2026 in China?
Better intermediate output and steady export interest firmed the market. Plenty of diosgenin around, so prices held near USD 158,000/MT.
Germany firmed to USD 177,000/MT, about 1.7% over USD 174,000/MT. Tight global supply and steady European hormone-therapy demand won out over the competitive Asian offers.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q2 2026 in Germany?
Tight supply and firm European demand held the quarter up. High energy costs kept the bottom near USD 177,000/MT.
India firmed to USD 167,000/MT, up roughly 1.8% from USD 164,000/MT, on steady export demand and better feedstock economics.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q2 2026 in India?
Firm export offtake and steadier feedstock lifted it to USD 167,000/MT after the shallow Q1 dip.
The US slipped a shade in Q1, to USD 204,000/MT, about 0.5% under Q4. Pharmaceutical and veterinary buyers were destocking into year-end, and landed imports got cheaper.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q1 2026 in United States?
Cheaper trans-Pacific container rates cut landed costs, and the year-end destocking thinned spot demand. USD 204,000/MT.
China eased to USD 155,000/MT, roughly 0.6% under Q4. Winter shutdowns trimmed intermediate output, but soft export enquiries and competitive spot offers kept it a touch lower anyway.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q1 2026 in China?
Soft enquiries and competitive offers eased quotes, even with the winter shutdowns thinning intermediate supply. Prices settled near USD 155,000/MT.
Germany slipped to USD 174,000/MT in Q1, about 0.6% under Q4, on competitive Asian offers and steady import arrivals.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q1 2026 in Germany?
Competitive offers and enough imports eased it to USD 174,000/MT. Tight global supply kept the fall small.
India eased to USD 164,000/MT, roughly 0.6% under Q4, on seasonal demand pauses and competitive regional offers.
Why did the price of Progesterone change in Q1 2026 in India?
Seasonal pauses and competitive offers eased it to USD 164,000/MT, with steady feedstock softening the move.
Progesterone stayed in a narrow band, quarter after quarter. USD 175,000/MT in Q2 2025, then USD 178,000/MT, then USD 179,000/MT, a dip to USD 178,000/MT in Q1 2026, then USD 181,000/MT in Q2, about 3.4% net across the run. Tight supply and steady demand held it rangebound. The only real wobble was that shallow first-quarter destocking dip.
| Quarter | Price (USD/MT) | QoQ Change | Direction |
| Q2 2026 | 181,000 | +1.7% | ↑ Rising |
| Q1 2026 | 178,000 | -0.6% | ↓ Falling |
| Q4 2025 | 179,000 | +0.6% | ↑ Rising |
| Q3 2025 | 178,000 | +1.7% | ↑ Rising |

| Q3 2026 | In Progress | - | - In Progress |
Progesterone firmed a touch through 2025 without ever leaving its band. The average opened near USD 172,000/MT and closed around USD 179,000/MT, up about 4.1%. Tight global supply, steady diosgenin harvests, steady hormone replacement and fertility demand: that was the mix, with only a little year-end destocking softness.
The US rose from about USD 197,000/MT early in 2025 to USD 205,000/MT by Q4, up roughly 4.1%. Tight supply and steady hormone-therapy demand held it up, and high energy and conversion costs firmed the bottom. Tight supply, steady demand: that was the year.
China climbed from around USD 150,000/MT to USD 156,000/MT, about 4.0%. Integrated diosgenin kept costs contained, and steady export demand plus the odd winter shutdown held offers up. Feedstock integration meeting steady demand, in short.
Germany rose from roughly USD 168,000/MT to USD 175,000/MT, up about 4.2%. Tight import supply and steady European hormone-therapy demand firmed it, while easing freight took a little off the cost pressure. Tight supply did the driving.
India firmed from about USD 158,000/MT to USD 165,000/MT, a 4.4% gain. Steady export demand, firm fermentation supply, stable feedstock. Demand held, and that was enough.

Most of it goes into hormone replacement therapy and women's reproductive health, menopause, luteal and fertility support, pregnancy maintenance. A veterinary slice, oestrus synchronisation among it, adds a bit more.
In Q2 2026 it ran USD 207,000/MT in the US, USD 158,000/MT in China, USD 177,000/MT in Germany, and USD 167,000/MT in India. The US is priciest, on import reliance and regulation.
Up, but barely. From about USD 172,000/MT early on to USD 179,000/MT by Q4, roughly 4.1%, held in a narrow band by tight supply and steady demand.
Three things. Tight global supply in a few integrated hands, steady diosgenin costs, and steady hormone replacement and fertility demand.
Figure a USD 179,000 to 195,000/MT band for the rest of 2026, held up by tight supply and steady hormone-therapy demand.
The US and Germany are dearest, on import reliance, regulation, and energy. India sits in the middle, fermentation-based. China's cheapest, on integrated diosgenin.

Mainly diosgenin and phytosterol costs, energy, and hormone-therapy demand. Environmental shutdowns, freight, and destocking cycles can shake things short term.
China leads, backward-integrated into diosgenin, with India and Germany behind. A compliance action in the east-coast clusters, or a shift in the diosgenin harvest, tends to reach every market inside a quarter or two.
Line contracts up with the diosgenin harvest and the destocking cycles, weigh fixed price against index-linked supply, and get cover set before supply-led firming. Diosgenin costs and Chinese compliance are the earliest read on the base.
