Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) is the common name of a family of proteins, recognized first in extracts of demineralized bone that were capable of encouraging bone formation at ectopic sites. Bone morphogenetic proteins are present in small amounts in bone material (nearly 1 microgram/kg dry weight of bone). Generally, the term bone morphogenetic proteins describes a certain function of these proteins, which have been implicated also in many other processes. Bone morphogenetic proteins such as BMP2, BMP4, and BMP7 also play a role in the specification of hematopoietic tissue from the mesodermal germ layer.
Bone morphogenetic proteins belong to the family of transforming growth factors. Presently, nearly twenty different bone morphogenetic proteins have been identified, all with different degrees of tissue stimulating properties. Bone morphogenetic proteins play important roles in a broad range of processes during the formation and maintenance of organs such as bone, cartilage, muscle, kidney, and blood vessels. As deregulation of the bone morphogenetic protein activity at multiple steps in signal transduction is associated with several human diseases, therapeutic use of activators and inhibitors of bone morphogenetic proteins signaling would provide potential avenues for the treatment of human ailments caused by hypo- and hyperactivation of bone morphogenetic proteins signals.
Bone tissue is a mineralized structure with complex metabolism, and given its mechanical functions, its structure must be adapted to bone function. Bone morphogenetic proteins group stimulates the formation of bone and cartilage and influences several non-osteogenic processes. Due to their osteogenic effect, bone morphogenetic proteins are employed in several areas of medicine, including dentistry, orthopaedics, sport and rehabilitation. Such applications are expected to drive the global bone morphogenetic proteins market. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic proteins (rhBMPs) are administered to the bone grafting site through surgery. Bone morphogenetic proteins stimulate bone growth naturally in the human body. These proteins that exist in the body can be produced, concentrated and placed in the area of the spine for spinal fusion to occur. More importantly, these can generate fusion without the need for any use of the patient’s own bone.
Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) is a member of the BMP subgroup of the TGFβ superfamily. It plays an important role in embryonic dorsalventral patterning, organogenesis, limb bud formation, and bone formation and regeneration. Bone morphogenetic protein 2 is an effective osteoinductive cytokine, capable of inducing bone and cartilage formation in association with osteoconductive carriers such as collagen and synthetic hydroxyapatite. Bone morphogenetic protein 2 also plays a key role in cardiac morphogenesis and is expressed in multiple tissues including lung, spleen, brain, liver, prostate ovary and small intestine.
InfuseTM Bone Graft is a premium product for autograft replacement due to its high osteoinductivity. Infuse bone graft is recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) applied to an absorbable collagen sponge carrier (ACS). One of the functions of the protein is to inspire natural bone formation. INFUSE® Bone Graft is a revolutionary bone graft that helps inspire natural bone formation and remodelling and circumvents the need to harvest bone from other parts of a patient’s body. Infuse has been on the market since 2002 and used in over 1 million patients across the world. Such solutions are expected to drive growth of the global bone morphogenetic proteins market. Infuse is indicated for certain spinal fusion procedures in skeletally mature patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) from L2 to S1, as well as for treating certain acute, open tibial shaft fractures. Infuse is also approved for certain oral-maxillofacial procedures.
