Press Release
The global biodegradable polymers market is likely to be driven by increased interest in biodegradable materials for use in different sectors such as packaging, automotive, construction, agriculture, and medicine, and advantages afforded by such polymers. Advantages of biodegradable polymers include: ease of recycling, reduced waste generation, decreased carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, reduced use of petroleum, decreased energy consumption during manufacturing. North America, Europe and Asia are expected to be key markets.
Several companies offer biodegradable polymer solutions that have applications across sectors. For example, Mater-Bi® by Novamont (Italy) (composed of starch and polyester; used to prepare collection bags for green waste, agricultural films, disposable items); Polynat® by Roverc’h (France) [composed of Rye flower (80%); used to manufacture disposable items, flower containers); Ecofoam® by American Excelsior Company (USA) (composed of starch; used to manufacture wrapping plastics); Biopol® by Goodfellow (Great Britain) (composed of PHB/PHV; used to manufacture razors and bottles); Eco-pla® by Cargill Dow (USA) (composed of PLA; used to manufacture sanitary products, sport clothes, conditioning and packaging); Bio-D® by Cirad (France) (composed of proteins extracted from cotton seed; used to manufacture agricultural films); Ecoflex® by BASF (Germany) (composed of co-polyester; used to manufacture agricultural films); Eastar Bio® by Eastman (Great Britain) (composed of co-polyester; used to manufacture agricultural films); BAK 1095® by Bayer (Germany) (composed of polyester amide; used to manufacture disposable items, flower containers).

Biodegradable polymers are used for stitches after surgery, tissue ingrowth materials, controlled medication release systems, plasma replacements, seed coatings (agriculture), fast-food packaging, in the soil to increase aeration and encourage plant growth, in gene therapy, controlled medicine delivery, etc.
Such solutions and their applications are expected to boost the global biodegradable polymers market.
In 2021, BASF and WPO Polymers agreed to cooperate to distribute biopolymer ecovio®; according to the agreement, WPO Polymers would act as distributor of BASF‘s ecovio® film product range for certified compostable shopping bags, organic waste bags and fruit and vegetable bags in Spain and Portugal.
In 2022, NatureWorks announced their intention to establish a new headquarters and advanced biopolymer research facility in Plymouth, MN, considering the rapid growth in the market for sustainable biomaterials. Expanded laboratory capabilities would support research into the full circular lifecyle of IngeoTM biopolymers from next generation fermentation technology to new applications and improved functionality.
In 2021, Danimer Scientific and Total Corbion PLA entered into a long-term collaborative arrangement for the supply of Luminy® PLA, a biobased polymer employed to produce compostable products. The agreement enhanced Danimer’s ability to meet customer needs for resins warranting a blend of PLA- and PHA-based inputs.
In 2020, TotalEnergies Corbion announced its intent to build its second PLA plant with a capacity ramping up to 100,000 tons per annum. The expansion would position TotalEnergies Corbion to meet the rapidly growing demand for Luminy® PLA resins. The new plant was planned to be located on a Total site in Grandpuits, France, and expected to be operational in 2024.
