Cellulose Acetate Prices, Demand and Supply Overview

The United States paid the most for cellulose acetate in Q3 2026: USD 3,500/MT, down 0.9% from USD 3,532/MT in Q2. Higher labor and freight costs, strict environmental rules and a small number of local producers keep American prices above the other three markets. Worldwide, the average fell 1.2% to USD 3,088/MT from USD 3,124/MT, mostly because new capacity in China and lower wood pulp prices led producers to lower offers in all four markets. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the USD 2,950-3,195/MT range, with wood pulp and acetic acid prices, new capacity in Asia, energy costs and demand from filter makers doing most of the work.

Cellulose acetate is a plastic and fiber material made by treating cellulose from wood pulp or cotton linters with acetic acid. It is sold as flake, tow and film and used in cigarette filters, eyewear frames, textiles, photographic film, coatings and packaging. Prices in this report refer to flake and are quoted per metric ton. They depend on pulp prices, acetic acid prices, energy costs and demand from filter and fiber makers.

Production is concentrated in China, the United States, Germany, Japan and Mexico, where large plants convert pulp into flake and tow. Producers buy wood pulp and acetic acid under contracts, so input prices set most of the cost. Prices vary by degree of substitution, viscosity and grade, and most volume moves under quarterly contracts to filter and fiber customers.

Cellulose Acetate Price Forecast for 2026

Prices should ease slightly through the rest of 2026. Capacity in Asia is ample, pulp prices stay low and demand from filter makers is soft. Seasonal orders from eyewear and packaging users limit the size of the decline. The Q3 2026 global average of USD 3,088/MT is 3.3% below the USD 3,194/MT of Q3 2025.

Risks to the Q4 outlook lean to the downside. What could push prices higher? Higher pulp prices, plant closures or stronger demand from filter makers would lift prices. What could pull them lower? Further capacity additions, lower pulp prices or weaker filter demand would extend the decline.

Region 2026 Price Range (USD/MT) Outlook
Global Average 2,950 - 3,195 New capacity and low pulp prices limit prices
China 2,530 - 2,745 Large capacity keeps prices lowest
India 2,720 - 2,950 Imports from China limit prices
Germany 3,200 - 3,465 Energy and labor costs keep prices high
United States 3,340 - 3,620 Higher labor and freight costs keep prices highest
