Introduction

Healthy soil is still the base of good agricultural production in Vietnam. This approach enables farmers to identify the specific nutrient needs of their crops, eliminating the reliance on uniform, one-size-fits-all fertilizer formulations. Moreover, soil sampling also assists farmers in locating elemental breakdowns such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, or micronutrients. For this reason, crop feeding plans can be changed to not only increase production but also keep the soil intact.

Research-based nutrient management is currently the main focus. For instance, in December 2023, Vietnam's Plant Protection Department and Soils and Fertilizers Institute together signed an agreement with Yara Vietnam to collaborate on sustainable crop nutrition solutions. The alliance prioritizes the creation of better fertilizer management techniques that are based on soil factors and crop needs. The program is aimed at supporting both research and development and farm demonstration projects that educate farmers to not only efficiently apply fertilizers but also keep their soil healthy.

Major Drivers, Trends, and Challenges

Soil health is getting more attention since degraded land has a detrimental effect on long-term farming. Vietnam produces huge quantities of agricultural produce, but in some places, overcultivation has damaged the soil, resulting in an imbalance between nutrients and structure. The problem is exacerbated by the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides. Improving soil management contributes to sustainable farming and dependable crops.

Farmers in Dong Thap and Binh Thuan are now getting hands-on training on soil testing and plant nutrition. They learn to take samples, read lab reports, and check for salinity and pH before buying fertilizer. Understanding crop requirements enables them to apply precisely what is required, reducing expenses and preventing waste. Additionally, testing helps make better crop decisions and expedites the restoration of healthy soil. Some farmers even modify their strategies in response to test results.

Despite these advancements, challenges continue to hinder the market growth, especially considering that many Vietnamese farms are smallholder farms that do not always have easy access to soil testing facilities and advising services. Some farmers may also still use traditional approaches to fertilizers, rather than using a more scientifically based approach to nutrient management.
