The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.70% during the forecast period of 2026-2035 to reach a value of USD 9.23 Billion by 2035. Surging demand for high-efficiency nitrogen fertilizers, increasing agricultural productivity requirements, and growing emphasis on balanced crop nutrition are some of the key factors that are driving growth in the market. Fertilizer manufacturers are developing improved calcium ammonium nitrate formulations that enhance nutrient absorption, crop yields, and soil health while reducing nitrogen losses.

Key Market Trends and Insights

  • The European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism entered its definitive period on 1 January 2026, requiring authorised importers to purchase certificates covering embedded emissions in fertilisers, which changes the landed cost of imported nitrate product.
  • European nitrogen fertiliser costs rose to around 71 percent above 2024 levels, with April
  • 2026 prices roughly 40 percent higher than February 2026, prompting policy intervention.
  • The Council of the European Union suspended most-favoured nation duties on calcium ammonium nitrate and other fertilisers for one year from May 2026, excluding Russia and Belarus, to widen access to alternative suppliers.
  • The European Union imports approximately 30 percent of its nitrogen fertiliser demand, which is why trade policy has become a primary determinant of regional availability and price.

Market Size and Forecast

  • Market Size in 2025: USD 5.83 Billion

  • CAGR from 2026 to 2035: 4.70%

What is the Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Market?

The calcium ammonium nitrate market covers the production and supply of a nitrogen fertiliser made by combining ammonium nitrate with powdered limestone or dolomite, producing a granular product also known as nitro limestone or nitro chalk. The resulting mixture is physiologically neutral, which distinguishes it from ammonium sulphate and urea that acidify soil over repeated applications. Roughly half the nitrogen is present in nitrate form and immediately available for root uptake, while the ammonium fraction releases more gradually, and the calcium carbonate carrier supplies a secondary nutrient that supports soil structure and root development.

Agriculture accounts for the overwhelming majority of consumption, with the product applied to cereals, oilseeds, grassland and horticultural crops, particularly in temperate regions where surface-applied urea would lose nitrogen to volatilisation. A smaller and closely regulated share serves as a low-grade oxidiser in mining and quarrying, subject to security controls on nitrate content, storage and distribution. Production is concentrated among integrated nitrogen manufacturers operating ammonia and nitric acid capacity, and commercial competitiveness now depends on natural gas cost, trade policy on fertiliser imports, and the carbon intensity of the producing plant, since carbon border pricing has made embedded emissions a component of landed cost in the European market.

Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Market Dynamics

There are two important reasons behind the growth of the global calcium ammonium nitrate market. First, agronomic preference is shifting towards nitrate-based nitrogen sources that supply plant-available nitrogen immediately and deliver calcium alongside it, improving nutrient uptake efficiency and soil structure compared with urea, which is subject to volatilisation losses. Second, food demand from a growing population requires yield improvement on a fixed arable base, which places a premium on fertilisers that reduce nitrogen losses rather than simply increasing application rates.

The global calcium ammonium nitrate market is undergoing a structural change, in which carbon accounting and trade policy shape competitiveness as directly as production cost. This trend became more evident on 1 January 2026, when the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism entered its definitive period, obliging authorised importers to register and purchase certificates reflecting carbon dioxide emissions embedded in imported fertilisers, with a de minimis exemption for occasional imports up to 50 tonnes annually. European producers operating under the emissions trading system gain relative protection, while importers face a landed cost that now varies with the carbon intensity of the exporting plant.

The global calcium ammonium nitrate market is also undergoing transformation due to trade measures that redirect supply routes across Europe. In May 2026, the Council of the European Union suspended most-favoured nation customs duties for one year on ammonia, urea, ammonium sulphate, calcium ammonium nitrate, urea ammonium nitrate, NPKs, MAP and DAP through duty-free tariff rate quotas set at 2024 import volumes plus a 20 percent top-up, with Russia and Belarus excluded and remaining subject to staged tariffs. The intervention followed nitrogen fertiliser costs reaching around 71 percent above 2024 levels.

Asia Pacific Leads Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Market Growth

During the historical period, Europe held a significant share in the calcium ammonium nitrate industry. Europe is one of the major nitrate fertiliser manufacturers. The presence of major manufacturers in Europe, such as Yara International, Eurochem Group, and Helm AG, is expected to fuel the market in the near future. During the forecast period, the Asia Pacific market is expected to grow at a significant rate. Rice, wheat, and maize are the main crops grown in the region. The calcium ammonium nitrate industry in the Asia Pacific is expected to grow due to increased agricultural production in countries such as China, India, and Indonesia during the forecast period. Meanwhile, the demand in North America is expected to grow at a moderate pace in the coming years. The United States is a major exporter of maize and soybeans. This, in turn, is expected to propel the country's market in the immediate future.

Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Industry Segmentation

Nitro limestone and nitro chalk are other names for calcium ammonium nitrate or CAN. By combining powdered limestone with ammonium nitrate, calcium ammonium nitrate is formed. It is a commonly used fertiliser all over the world. The mixture's physiological properties are neutral.

Market Breakup by Application

  • Fertiliser
  • Explosive

Key Insight: Fertiliser dominates the application segment of the global calcium ammonium nitrate market, since the product was developed for agricultural use and its combination of nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen and calcium suits cereals, oilseeds, grassland and horticulture across a wide range of soil conditions. Roughly half the nitrogen is immediately available to the crop while the remainder releases gradually, and the physiologically neutral character avoids the soil acidification associated with sustained ammonium application. The explosive application represents a smaller and more tightly regulated share, reflecting security controls on nitrate content, and demand in this category is concentrated in mining and quarrying rather than agriculture.

Market Breakup by Region

  • North America
  • Europe
  • Asia Pacific
  • Latin America
  • Middle East and Africa

Key Insight: Europe held a significant share of the global calcium ammonium nitrate market during the historical period, supported by an established nitrate fertiliser manufacturing base including Yara International, EuroChem Group and Helm AG, and by agronomic practice favouring nitrate chemistry on temperate soils. The region is now the focus of the most active policy intervention, through carbon border pricing from January 2026 and a one-year suspension of import duties from May 2026. Asia Pacific is expected to grow at a significant rate over the forecast period, driven by rice, wheat and maize production across China, India and Indonesia, while North America is forecast to expand moderately on maize and soybean cultivation.

Fertiliser Demand Anchors Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Growth

The major factor driving the calcium ammonium nitrate industry growth is an increase in fertiliser demand from the agricultural sector. During the forecast era, main factors such as the rising global population and rising food demand are expected to drive the demand for calcium ammonium nitrate. The various applications of calcium ammonium nitrate, such as its use as a fertiliser in enhancing soil fertility and increasing production potential as well as its use as a low-scale explosive in underdeveloped countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, and others, are expected to propel the calcium ammonium nitrate industry over the forecast period. Meanwhile, the market in developing regions is expected to grow due to rapid economic growth and a thriving agricultural sector.

Market Challenges, Restraints, and Opportunities

Affordability is the immediate challenge confronting calcium ammonium nitrate producers. European nitrogen fertiliser costs reached around 71 percent above 2024 levels, with April 2026 prices roughly 40 percent higher than in February, which compresses farmer purchasing power and encourages application rate reductions that reduce volume even where agronomic need persists. Natural gas remains the dominant variable in ammonia production cost, leaving margins exposed to energy market volatility. Security regulation governing nitrate content, storage and transport adds compliance obligations that producers of urea and other non-nitrate fertilisers do not carry.

Trade and carbon policy restrain commercial flexibility. Since January 2026, authorised importers bringing fertilisers into the European Union must purchase certificates covering embedded carbon dioxide emissions, which raises landed cost for high-intensity producers and requires verified emissions measurement that many exporters have yet to establish. Anti-dumping duties on nitrogen solutions and staged tariffs on Russian and Belarusian product further narrow sourcing options, while the European Union continues to import roughly 30 percent of its nitrogen demand.

Nutrient use efficiency presents the clearest opportunity. Nitrate chemistry avoids the volatilisation losses affecting surface-applied urea and supplies calcium alongside nitrogen, which supports positioning on yield per unit applied rather than delivered price. Decarbonised production routes offer additional competitive advantage under carbon border pricing.
