Casein based labeling adhesives are derived from casein, a milk protein known for its strong adhesive properties and eco-friendliness. These adhesives are particularly effective in labeling applications due to their excellent water resistance and ability to bond well with various substrates, including glass and plastic. They are commonly used in the beverage industry, especially for beer and wine bottles, where their ability to wash off easily from reusable containers is advantageous. The use of casein glue dates to ancient Egypt, where it was employed in various crafts. In the Middle Ages, it was popular among artists for panel painting. By the late 19th century, casein adhesives became widely used in woodworking and furniture making, although synthetic alternatives have largely replaced them in many applications today.
Casein based labeling adhesives demonstrate high adhesion strength, typically ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 N/mm2, and possess a viscosity of approximately 170 Pa·s, which allows for easy application. The pH level is generally neutral to slightly alkaline, around 7.0 to 8.0, which contributes to their compatibility with different substrates. These adhesives are water-resistant and can withstand temperatures up to 60°C (140°F) without losing their adhesive properties, making them particularly suitable for wet conditions. They also feature a quick drying time of about 30 to 60 minutes.
These adhesives are composed of 18-25% casein, which provides strong bonding capabilities. They can be modified with additives such as sodium hydroxide (up to 2%) and borax (up to 1%) to enhance water resistance and washability from reusable containers. These adhesives are soluble in water, allowing for easy cleanup and removal from surfaces, which is especially beneficial for returnable containers. Moreover, these labels have a typical shelf life of up to 12 months when stored properly.
The production process of casein based labeling adhesive begins with the preparation of ingredients, where polyvinyl alcohol is dissolved in water at high temperatures to create a polyvinyl alcohol solution. Concurrently, casein and borax are dissolved in water to form a casein solution, while corn starch is gelatinised at temperatures between 80-85°C. Next, these solutions are mixed; the polyvinyl alcohol solution is combined with the casein solution in a volume ratio of approximately 1:0.7 to 1:0.9 at 70-75°C.
Following this, modifiers such as dispersing agents, gelatinised corn starch, mixed chelating agents, sorbic acid, and disodium hydrogen phosphate are gradually added to the reaction mixture. The mixture is then maintained at 70-75°C for about 1 to 1.5 hours to allow for proper reaction and curing. Afterward, the pH of the adhesive is adjusted using ammoniacal liquor to achieve a final pH of 7.4 to 7.8, followed by additional stirring to ensure homogeneity. Finally, the adhesive is allowed to cool before being packaged for distribution.

The casein based labeling adhesive market finds extensive applications primarily in the beverage industry, particularly for labeling glass bottles in breweries, champagne houses, and soft drink factories. These adhesives excel in cold and wet conditions, making them ideal for products that require high initial tackiness and easy removability for returnable bottles. In 2024, the European soft drink market is projected to reach nearly 97 billion liters, with Germany contributing around EUR 10 billion in revenue, while low/no-calorie options account for over 70% of purchases in the UK. Similarly, global beer production is expected to exceed 1.9 billion hectoliters in 2024, reflecting a continued preference for traditional and craft brews. This growing demand highlights the need for effective labeling solutions. Furthermore, ongoing research into the molecular properties of casein fractions is expected to enhance adhesive performance, aligning with market trends toward renewable materials.
